My name is Maria Lukkarinen (though I go by my artist moniker Mary Elizabeth
Black), a multidisciplinary graphic designer working as a creative partner across all
aspects of visual communication—bringing brands, products, visual identities, and
publications to life through thoughtful design solutions and appropriate print and
digital implementations.
Over the past 15+ years, I’ve worked extensively with international clients across
visual identity, editorial design, and marketing—translating creative concepts into
refined final artwork that adheres to established guidelines and adapting visuals
consistently across various brand assets, all while ensuring technical accuracy
and precision for both print and digital output. From working in publications
and leading as in-house designer and project manager to launching my own one woman design venture in 2015, I’ve always been driven by the pursuit of creating
outstanding, original artwork—tailored to meet each project’s unique needs both
aesthetically and strategically.
My background also includes a strong foundation in photography (including
editing, pre- and post-production) and visual expression, which has enriched my
design practice with a sharp eye for detail, colour, and composition. In addition to
the creative side, I’m well-accustomed to the management aspects of the work and bring strong organizational skills, a hands-on attitude, and solid communication, social, and team-working abilities. Whether collaborating within a team or leading independent projects, I approach creative work with a structured, quality-focused, and dedicated mindset—infused with a genuine passion for bringing ideas to life and a constant drive to push ideas further and explore new possibilities.
